Case Study of The Cube, Mailbox, Birmingham

Client: Birmingham Development Company
Contractor: Robert Prettie Ltd
Products: Stourflex EPDM Rubber Bellows &
Stainless Steel Pump Connectors

The Cube is the final phase of Birmingham’s successful Mailbox development, providing 42,000m2 of accommodation for shops, bars, cafes, offices, apartments and a boutique hotel.

The design of the building is geometric metal and a glass cladding system.

The modular cladding system also plays a key role in the buildings environmental strategy, offering infinite flexibility to tailor the glazing of each façade in response to potential solar gain.

Other energy efficient measures incorporated into the building design include natural ventilation, canal-water cooling and the installation of centralized plant.

Stourflex’s involvement in this prestigious project was to supply anti-vibration bellows for the primary and secondary heating and chilled water pumps. The bellows, which included the WRAS approved JP23VS and JP02 pump connectors, were supplied to Robert Prettie, who are one of the largest Plumbing and Heating Companies in the Midlands and amongst the top twenty nation wide.

All bellows were supplied from stock with sizes ranging from 80mm up to 250mm. The Stourflex JP02 Tied epdm rubber bellows and the JP23VS Stainless Steel WRAS approved pump connectors were selected to control noise and vibration on pipework systems throughout the project.

Stourflex tied flexibles are supplied with zinc plated oval flanges and threaded tie bars complete with rubber top hat washers as standard. This allows for the necessary adjustment during site installation but prevents bellows extension in operation at pressure above three bar. The design of the rubber top hat washers arrangement eliminates the transmission of noise and vibration within the pipework.

STOURFLEX® offer a complete design service which includes advice, site surveys and after sales support.
